Fueling Your Studies: New Cafés and Canteens

admin

You may have heard, that we are sadly loosing Caf’inn. But as one chapter closes, another one opens. Luckily for us, the new campus setup has this well covered. When Aarhus BSS moves to Universitetsbyen, we’re getting brand new eateries, so you’ll never be far from a meal or a caffeine fix between lectures.

Spisestedet

In University City, there will be a main cafeteria known as “Spisestedet” (literally “The Eatery”) plus
several café outlets.
Spisestedet will likely serve daily hot meals, salads, and all the usual canteen fare – imagine something akin to the current Samfundsfaglig Kantine, but in a shiny new space.

Other Eateries

In addition to that, multiple smaller cafés or coffee stands will pop up around the new buildings. So whether you need your morning latte or an afternoon pick-me-up, you’ll have options a short walk from class. These on-campus cafés are expected to cater to both academic and social activity, meaning they’ll be comfy spots to study or chat (and perhaps open beyond 4 pm, we hope).

One particularly cool new spot will be the café in building 1791. It’s set to have its own vibe, likely a smaller coffee shop feel with pastries, etc., plus a connected study area. This could become a favorite “study café” for students – picture plugging in your laptop with a cappuccino by your side, surrounded by classmates doing the same. Also, keep an eye out for that student café in 1791 doubling as an art piece – there’s was an art
competition
for students to design its wall art. That means the space will not only feed us but also
reflect student creativity. We are so excited to see the final result that will be part of our everyday life.

This is a concept foto, so results may vary.

The Rest of Campus

Meanwhile, over in University Park, our existing Aarhus BSS canteen (Samfundsfaglig Kantine) is staying put and “continues as before.” So if you have classes or study sessions near Bartholins Allé or around the social science buildings, you can still enjoy your lunch there. Essentially, BSS students will have two home bases for food – one in the Park and one in the City – plus any other AU cafeterias around (e.g., the main one by the Aula).
AU has even provided an overview of all the canteens on campus, which is handy if you’re looking
for alternative options or halal/vegan offerings, etc. With campus centralizing, these eateries are all
within reach. For example, the Math canteen or Arts canteen won’t be far if you want to try a different
menu.
In terms of variety, having multiple outlets means shorter lines and more culinary variety. University
City’s campus will be integrated with the city, so who knows, maybe even external vendors (like food
trucks or a bakery) could operate nearby.

In summary, you won’t go hungry (or uncaffeinated) on Campus 2.0, even if we are loosing our dear Caf’inn. AU has planned for sufficient dining options to keep thousands of students and staff fueled. Whether it’s a hearty lunch at Spisestedet or a coffee in the atrium.
