Seamless Connections: Tunnels Linking Campus

admin

One practical question you might have:

With BSS spread between University Park and the new University City, how do we get around? The answer: seamless underground connections. As part of Campus 2.0, AU is ensuring that University City and University Park feel like one continuous campus by constructing underpasses (tunnels) beneath Nørrebrogade, the road that separates them. In fact, there will be three pedestrian/bicycle passages linking the two areas. No need to find to a crosswalk and wait at traffic lights just to cross the street – you’ll simply walk or bike through the tunnels.
The first of these new tunnels opened in 2022, featuring the clever design touch of yellow and red
bricks to represent the meeting of University Park’s yellow-brick architecture with the red-brick hospital buildings of University City.
Another passage is set to be completed in 2025 , and together with an existing underpass, they complete the triad of connections. This means by the time BSS classes start in University City in 2026, you’ll have multiple convenient routes to move between the Park and City sections of campus .

Why is this relevant for me?

From a student’s perspective, this is fantastic. For example, if you have a lecture in the new BSS
auditorium (University City) but want to study in the main library or meet a friend by the lake in
University Park, it’s just a short walk underground. In the FAQ for students, AU even notes that
University Park’s many facilities like the library and main cafeteria will be “easily accessible via the
passages between Universitetsbyen and Universitetsparken.” In other words, the tunnels make our
expanded campus feel compact. They’re well-lit, safe, and bike-friendly, embracing AU’s push for a pedestrian- and cycle-friendly campus.
AU often talk about breaking down silos between fields – here we’re literally breaking barriers between
campus zones. These links ensure that even though BSS is gaining new buildings, we’re not isolated:
the heart of campus is only a few minutes away. It’s a small detail that will make a big difference in daily
life. Plus, it’s pretty cool. So get ready to explore the new shortcuts; they’ll be the arteries connecting our campus city.
