Frequently Asked Questions

Here, you find the answers to some of the questions frequently asked about Studenterlauget.

You can find the answers to the following questions:

Q: Who works in Studenterlauget?
A: Primarily students of ASB. There are a few non-students employed in the administration, but apart from them all employees are students. Job advertisements are frequently posted around the school, so if you wish to work for Denmark’s largest student union, you are more than welcome to apply for one of them.

Q: How do you become a member of Studenterlauget?
A: You can use our website or you can go to Kontoret in the C-wing. You have to pay the membership fee at Kontoret.

Q: How much does a membership cost?
A: The membership charge is DKK 100 per year of study.

Q: How do you join the board?
A: All members of Studenterlauget can run for a position on the board. Elections are held at the General Assembly held in March/April, and each board member holds the position for a one year term. See the articles of association for further information.

Q: Is it possible to see Studenterlauget's financial statement?
A: Yes, the financial statement is presented at the General Assembly, but you can also ask to see it at Kontoret. Note that the financial statement is in Danish.

Q: Are other student unions at ASB to be approved by Studenterlauget?
A: No. Any student at ASB can start his or her own student union.

However, to ensure the cooperation of the student unions, a "Joint Student Union" has been established, and Studenterlauget is head of this.

If a student union is a member of the Joint Student Union, it gains a number of benefits apart from the advantage of cooperating with the other student unions. These benefits include use of Studenterlauget's car, a copying card for Kontoret, access to an office on the Student Union Hallway (Foreningsgangen), an account at Kontoret and much more.

When a new student union applies for the Joint Student Union, the chairman of the board of Studenterlauget will read their regulations to ensure that it is an actual student union. What the purpose of the applying student union is will not be considered.

In this context, it should be noted that almost all student unions on the ASB campus are members of the Joint Student Union and no unions have been known to be rejected for membership.

By having this procedure, Studenterlauget knows which Joint Student Union members there are on campus, who to contact etc.

Q: Why are not many foreign students employed by Studenterlauget?
A: We do not have a policy of employment based on nationality at Studenterlauget. Studenterlauget is a complete equal opportunities workplace. However, a number of the functions within our organisation do require a fairly high proficiency of Danish. Thereby not said that there are no jobs which could be relevant for a foreign student, because there are jobs where the language issue is less dominant. Naturally, foreign students can apply for these jobs, just like Danish students.

We would like to add that we usually do not employ students who are on campus one semester or less. This is due to the resources required when training a new employee. This policy applies to all applicants, Danish and non-Danish.

Q: Why don't you post more information in English instead of Danish?
A: First and foremost, we would like to make it clear that we welcome all initiatives which help integrate the foreign students at ASB. However, as we are a non-profit organisation, it ultimately becomes a matter of resources.

We are currently working on making our information more accessible to the foreign student community at ASB. This website is one of our initiatives. Due to financial issues, the process of presenting our information in English is a long one - not one we can conduct over night. Hopefully, in time, we will be able to present all our information in English.

Q: Why are the prices so high in Caféen and Plug Inn?
A: Studenterlauget does not receive financial support for Cafeen and Plug Inn (or any other business unit, for that matter) from the school. This factor combined with our goal of making the individual business units break even, results in a sandwich having to costs DKK 25.

Q: Can the prices be lowered?
A: It's difficult, but we try! Due to the settings at our disposal on campus, we cannot make a number of items "from scratch", - for instance, we cannot make our own bread. Due to this, we typically have to buy products which are in some way processed, which is more expensive than producing the items ourselves. Naturally, we do our best to obtain the lowest prices possible from our suppliers.

We could canalise money from one business unit to another in an attempt to lower prices in a selected area. If we for instance raised the price on tap beer in Klubben, we could lower the prices on sandwiches in Caféen and Plug Inn. However, we do not feel that this is fair. We think that it is more fair to let our members choose where they want to spend their money, and this means that the users of a business unit have to pay the actual price of the services provided.

Q: Why is the menu always the same in Caféen and Plug Inn?
A: It is not,- not exactly anyway. It is necessary for us to maintain a basis menu, if we changed the entire menu often the costs would increase immensely. However, we do offer monthly specials, such as the Sandwich of the Month and the Pasta Salad of the Month. Also, we have various new hot meals in Plug Inn and a theme week at least once each semester.
It can be quite costly for us to change our menu if something turns out not to be a success, as it will have a huge impact on our gross profit. We can only afford to keep items on the menu which give a profit, or at least not a deficit.

Q: Is it possible to rent Klubben?
A: Klubben can be rented by students at ASB. However, the event has to have some connection to ASB, for instance student union parties or graduation parties. For more information, ask at the bar in Klubben.

Q: Is it allowed to bring your own alcohol into Klubben?
A: No. If you are caught bringing alcohol into Klubben, you will be asked to leave immediately.

Q: Why does Klubben close at 02:00 on Thursdays?
A: As the staff of Klubben consists of students, many of whom have classes on Fridays, Klubben closes at 02:00.
A tip: If you wish to avoid the line at the coat check, it is advisable to collect your coat 10 minutes before closing time.

Q: Can you become a DJ in Klubben?
A: Yes. The DJ's in Klubben are students of ASB. Studenterlauget covers the expenses of beer, soda and spirits, but the DJ's bring their own CD's (original CD's only). We also have an in jack for an MP3 unit, such as a laptop. Ask at the bar for more information.

Q: What's the procedure for making photocopies at Kontoret?
A: You deposit your student ID at Kontoret and receive a copy registration card. When you are done copying, you pay for the number of photocopies which you have made. Don't leave with the copy registration card, as it is not a personal card.

Q: Are Kontoret and the adjoining computer rooms connected?
A: No. The computer rooms are under the school's administration and Kontoret is under Studenterlauget’s administration.

Q: Can you make deposits for your ASB print card at Kontoret?
A: No. The print system - like the computer rooms - belongs under ASB administration. You can make your deposits at ‘Informationen’ situated at the main entrance of ASB.

Q: How do you join SL Fitness?
A: SL Fitness is usually fully booked. We offer open registration for new members twice a year; at the beginning of February and September. Registration is open until all vacancies are booked.
